溫切斯特公學

溫切斯特公學（Winchester College）是英國第一所免費收受窮苦學生的大學預備學校，開創(chuàng)了英國公學教育的歷史。而今天的溫切斯特公學雖然已經(jīng)演變成為一所貴族寄宿制學校，但依然保持了自己悠久的傳統(tǒng)與文化。

溫切斯特公學由溫切斯特主教（Bishop of Winchester）威廉·威克姆（William of Wykeham）于1382年創(chuàng)建。威克姆在創(chuàng)辦溫切斯特公學的同時也建立了牛津大學新學院，讓公學畢業(yè)生能夠進入大學深造。溫切斯特公學的創(chuàng)立是英國公共教育以及之后蓬勃發(fā)展的公學制度的開端，這個體系日后被亨利六世模仿，建立了伊頓公學和劍橋大學國王學院。

作為一名優(yōu)秀的建筑師，威廉·威克姆親自主持設計了學校的部分建筑，其中大部分依然在使用中。學校創(chuàng)建之初一共只有70名學生，他們被稱為“學者”（scholars）和2名教員，這些學生全部享受免費教育。之后學校進一步的發(fā)展，也開始招收自費生（commoners），開始時只有大約10名，到了維多利亞時期學生數(shù)目大增，學校相繼建造了用于容納這些學生的10座寄宿樓。今天該校大約有700名自費生，但是依然保持了70個“學者”的名額，只不過今天即使是“學者”也許要支付部分高昂的學費，而不再享受全免學費的待遇。

溫切斯特公學至今保留著與牛津大學新學院的特殊關系：學校主管機構（Governing Body）的11名成員中，3名由新學院指派，其中包括新學院的院長。

在600多年的歷史中溫切斯特公學培養(yǎng)了眾多杰出人士，包括了坎特伯雷大主教亨利·齊契利（Henry Chichele）、英國探險家喬治·馬洛里（George Mallory）、歷史學家阿諾爾德·約瑟·湯因比（Arnold Joseph Toynbee）等人。

Fees from September 2009
Registration Fee
A registration fee of ￡200 is payable at the time of registration. It is not refundable in any circumstances.

Entrance Fee
An entrance fee of ￡500 is payable upon acceptance of a Housemaster’s offer of a place. It is refundable only if the candidate fails the entrance examination.

Termly Fee
Payment of the termly fee must be made in advance, before the first day of each term.

Boarding Fees: ￡9,615 per term (￡28,845 per annum)
Day Fees: ￡9,135 per term (￡27,405per annum)

Remission of Fees
Scholarships (College) 15% of boarding fee
Scholarships (Music) up to 15% of boarding or day fee
Exhibitions (Music) no remission but up to three free lessons
Sixth Form Awards up to 15% of boarding or day fee
Children of staff members 80% of boarding or day fee (pro rata for part-time members of staff)
